Spruce beetles kill trees by boring through the bark and feeding and breeding in the thin layer beneath the bark and trunk. This layer is what feeds the needles on the spruce tree and why you will notice the needles turning brown as a clear sign that your tree has been infected. Trees will typically be killed within the first few weeks of being fatally attacked, but it may take a year or more for the needles to begin turning reddish and falling off.
These trees once infected become dangerous because the underlying root rot and instability in the now compromised trunk. Dead trees become increasingly hazardous to structures and people, and it is recommended that they be removed to prevent them from unpredictably falling on their own. Removal of the infected trees can also help prevent the spread of the spruce beetles to other healthy trees.
